Blasi, Rutgers University (USA), and Carlo Borzaga, University of Trento (Italy) is now available.The handbook analyses, describes, and explains the complex world of organisations that assign ownership rights and governance control to stakeholders other than investors. The complexity of this set of organisations results both from the different degree of control exerted by stakeholders in each typology, and from different legislative and regulatory frameworks that govern these organisational forms. Euricse and ILO join forces toward improving cooperative statistics

This joint initiative is part of the global effort around improving cooperative statistics. The 19th International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS) held in Geneva from in October 2013 recognized the importance of having more comprehensive and internationally comparable statistics on the cooperatives by adopting a resolution for advancing work on the topic. This paper aims to investigate one of the first, if not the first, social enterprises in Europe, the Italian social cooperative. It begins with an analysis of the economic and social context of the 1970s that gave rise to this form of cooperative. This is followed by a statistical analysis, starting with the first survey conducted to monitor the phenomenon and concluding with the most recent statistical data. Read More

Key findings from the World Co-operative Monitor 2016

 The World Co-operative Monitor 2016 is the fifth edition of the annual research report produced by the International Co-operative Alliance (the Alliance) with the scientific and technical support of Euricse. The research, widely considered the primary source for global statistics on the economic dimensions of the co-operative movement, includes a new feature in 2016: an analysis of the capital structure of the Top 300 co-operative enterprises. Also included in this year’s edition is a special section focusing on consumer co-operatives within the Wholesale and retail trade sector. Read More

New Euricse and IHCO research project officially launched

The Euricse-IHCO (International Health Co-operative Organisation, a sectoral organisation of the International Co-operative Alliance) research project on health cooperatives and mutuals has officially started. On July 8th, the Euricse research team (Michela Giovannini, Carlo Borzaga and Gianluca Salvatori) met in Madrid with José Guisado and Jose Pérez, respectively President and secretary of IHCO.  The meeting took place at the headquarters of Asisa, the leading Spanish cooperative in the insurance sector and member of Fundación Espriu, a cooperative group, of which Guisado is CEO,  operating in the health sector. New features in the upcoming World Co-operative Monitor report

The 5th edition of the World Co-operative Monitor, an initiative of the International Co-operative Alliance and Euricse, will be published this fall and presented by Gianluca Salvatori at the International Summit of Cooperatives on October 11, 2016 in Quebec, Canada. The report presents the results from quantitative research on the world’s largest cooperative and mutual enterprises. Read More

What is the contribution to citizens’ health by cooperatives?

The kick-off meeting of the research project “Health cooperatives and mutuals worldwide – analysis of the contribution to citizens’ health by cooperatives around the world” managed by Euricse in collaboration with IHCO will be held on Friday, July 8 in Madrid, at the headquarters of Asisa (a health insurance cooperative, member of the Fundación Espriu and co-founder of IHCO). The research project examines both members and users of health cooperatives and studies the way in which health cooperatives operate in and contribute to the welfare system of their country. It aims to perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis on health cooperatives and the systems in which they operate. Read More
