Euricse participation at the International Co-operative Alliance Global Conference

25 October 2017

From the 14th to the 17th of November the global co-operative movement will gather in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the ICA Conference and General Assembly. Euricse will be involved in numerous ways in the rich programme focused on “Putting People at the Centre of Development”.

Since 2012 Euricse and the Alliance have partnered to produce the World Co-operative Monitor, a unique research project presenting data on the global co-operative movement. In addition to the rankings of the world’s largest 300 co-operative and mutual organizations, this year the Monitor has some exciting new features. The analysis on co-operative capital continues with a comparison between the Top 300 and a sample of small to medium sized co-operatives. Within each sector, not only are the rankings of the top per sector reported, but also trend analysis on the performance of these co-operatives and mutuals over the last 5 years.

World Co-operative Monitor

Gianluca Salvatori, Euricse Secretary General, will present the latest edition of the Monitor during the Thursday November 16th morning plenary session “Assessing our Sector: Growth, Challenges and Achievements”.  He will also participate in the session “Raising Capital the Co-operative Way” focused on identifying the most appropriate capital instruments for co-operatives. During this session, the findings from the capital chapter of the Monitor will be highlighted. conference-programme

Health cooperatives and mutuals worldwide

Euricse is conducting a global study in collaboration with IHCO (International Health Co-operative Organization) “Health cooperatives and mutuals worldwide – an analysis of the contribution to citizens’ health by cooperatives around the world”. Results from 15 countries and several case studies from this research will be presented by Gianluca Salvatori during the session organized by IHCO on Wednesday November 15th.

Working Group on Cooperative Statistics

Euricse researcher, Chiara Carini, will also be present at the global conference. She will participate in the session “Measuring the Movement: the path towards better statistics on co-operatives” to discuss the work Euricse is conducting as part of the COPAC Technical Working Group on Cooperative Statistics (Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives). The Technical Working Group supports a multi-stakeholder initiative to improve the quality of statistics on cooperatives, including by working towards a harmonised conceptual framework, definition and methodology for generating comparable statistics on cooperatives.

Cooperatives in Development

Over the last 6 months Euricse has also been collaborating with the ICA to provide methodological expertise for the main research projects developed through the ICA-EU partnership agreement “Cooperatives in Development – People-centered Businesses in Action”. The activities planned within the framework of the program include diverse research activities at the global and regional level. Among the main activities are a mapping of the cooperative actors and a legal framework analysis. Ilana Gotz of Euricse will present the Legal Frameworks methodology during the session “The enabling environment for co-operatives: Where are we now?”
